The short answer
ZIP wins on compatibility. RAR can compress a little tighter in some cases, but ZIP opens everywhere without extra software. For everyday sharing, ZIP is usually the safer choice.
Compatibility
ZIP is supported natively on Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone. RAR normally needs a dedicated tool to open. If you are sending files to someone whose setup you do not know, ZIP avoids problems.
Compression
RAR sometimes produces a slightly smaller file, but the difference is often minor for documents and images. If size is critical, test both. For most people the gap is not worth the compatibility trade-off.
When to keep RAR
Keep RAR when a workflow specifically requires it or when a file already arrived that way and stays inside your own tools. Otherwise, converting RAR to ZIP makes the archive easier for everyone to open.
